The New Covenant of the Spirit

The Apostle Paul, speaking to the churches in Galatia, makes a clear statement about the Holy Spirit as it regards the believer’s justification before God and freedom from the bondage of the Law:

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith(Galatians 3:13-14)

God’s promise to Abraham that in his seed “all the nations of the earth shall be blessed” is fulfilled by the receiving of the promised Holy Spirit through faith (Gal. 3:8; Gen 12:3). This is called the “Spirit of Adoption” (Rom 8:15) whereby we are given power to become sons and daughters of God (John 1:12). But wait; there’s more: we are given the ability under God’s New Covenant provisions to live like sons and daughters of God. Notice what God says through the prophets Jeremiah and Ezekiel regarding His Covenant provisions:

And they shall be my people, and I will be their God: And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them: And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me. (Jeremiah 32:38-40)

God says that He will give us “one heart” and that would have a reverence (the meaning here of ‘fear’) for Him (God) that would not depart. Ezekiel describes this further:

new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. (Ezekiel 36:26-27)

Here God Himself promises to put His Spirit (Holy Spirit) within us that will cause (enable) us to walk in His statutes and judgments. The Apostle Paul tells us that those who “are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God (Rom 8:14).This is New Covenant living, which is walking in the power of the Spirit which God promises to place within those persons who have put their faith in Christ and His work upon the cross.

The only way that we can have victory over sin and live a life that is pleasing to God is by trusting and walking in the New Covenant power that He has given us.
