(The bridge was opened in  dawn service on December 2nd.) The most striking visual feature of the new $19 million bridge is undoubtedly the tauihu (prow) and taurapa (stern) end panels of a seafaring waka adorning each end of the structure. It acknowledges Taipa as one of the first landing places in New Zealand of the Polynesian explorer Kupe. The waka hourua (a traditional double-hulled canoe) design and the pou whenua came about after extensive collaboration between NZA and local hapū representatives of Ngati Kahu.
